US Air Force Battle Campaign Streamers

In 1947 the US Congress created the Department of the Air Force and established the United States Air Force as a separate service equal to the Army and Navy.
Campaign Streamers are embroidered with the name and years of the campaign.
Combat credit entitles the organization to the appropriate campaign Streamers.
Campaign Streamers are Size 2, (2 3/4″ X 3′) except those identified by note 4 on MIL-DTL-14650/4K . These require the four feet length to accommodate the required embroidery.

US Army Battle Streamer Set MIL-DTL-14650/1Z

The Army adorns its flag with a separate Streamer for each important action in all wars in which it participated.  The Army currently allows 189 Streamers. The 2 3/4 inch x 4 feet long Streamers have a grommet at the hoist end (left side) to protect the material and provide a device to attach the Streamer to the ring holder and then to the top of the flagpole which is held in place by the top ornament (spear, eagle, etc).

US Coast Guard Battle Campaign Streamers

US Coast Guard history began in the 1790’s when Alexander Hamilton’s fleet of 10 small Revenue culters challenged French privateers preying on American merchant vessels.  During this French Naval War and the War of 1812 these culters proved their worth against experienced European warships.
There are currently 34 Streamers proudly displayed on the Coast Guard flag representing heroic actions in naval encounters from 1798 to the present.

US Marine Corps Battle Campaign Streamers

The Marine Corps adorns its flagstaff with 57 distinctly different Streamers that commemorate the battles, campaigns, service and unit citations of the Corps beginning in 1775 with the Revolutionary war through the current campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Five of the Streamers were awarded by foreign governments (France, Philippines, Korea and Vietnam (2)); Seven Unit Citations were awarded by other US departments (Army, Air Force, Navy and DOD).  These 7 are at the top of the list below.  The other 42 Streamers are battle, campaign and service Streamers  authorized by the US Government.

Marine Corps Streamers use embroidered stars to indicate participation in campaigns, expeditions or battles for which individual medals, citations and commendations were authorized.
The first award is an unadorned Streamer and thereafter a bronze star represents an additional engagement.  Up to four bronze stars are used and for the next award a silver star replaces the four bronze stars.  A silver star indicates participation in five particular engagements or designated phases of a campaign or war, or specific battles and is used in lieu of five bronze stars.
