The Flag Code is the US government guide for handling and display of the United State flag. It became law on December 22, 1942. Title 36, Chapter 10, Paragraph 174 of the code indicates, “It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.” While there is no specific definition for “proper illumination” We can recommend what you need. Flag poles used in a residential yard can usually be effectively lit with two fixtures.
Poles positioned on commercial or large residential lots will typically require three lighting fixtures.
The fixtures should be placed 180° apart if using two and 120° apart if using three.
Your fixtures should be located 6” to 3’ from the flagpole in low-voltage residential applications. For large residential, commercial and line-voltage applications, fixtures should be from 12” to 3’ from the base of the pole.
Aim the fixture at the ball at the top of the flagpole.
